Add printer to iPhone: the AirPrint steps Apple gives, and the limits
By Alberto Gulotta · Updated · 8 min read
Add printer to iPhone is not a setting: Apple’s help says an AirPrint printer on the same Wi-Fi network is chosen in the print dialog, with no driver or app to install. Apple’s pages also list what cannot use AirPrint. This page sets out the steps, the limits and what a guide adds.
| Question | Answer | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I add the printer? | In the print dialog of the app: Print, No Printer Selected, then an AirPrint-enabled printer | Apple Support, 14 November 2025 |
| What does the printer need? | AirPrint support, and a Wi-Fi or wired network; the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi | Apple Support |
| Do I install a driver or an app? | No: AirPrint needs no additional drivers or other software | Apple Support, 17 March 2026 |
| What cannot use AirPrint? | A printer on the USB port of an AirPort base station, or connected to a computer over Bluetooth | Apple Support |
| How do I check a print job? | Open the App Switcher and tap Print Center | Apple’s iPhone user guide |
Apple’s steps: you choose the printer when you print
Apple’s page on AirPrint says to confirm first that your printer supports AirPrint, which requires a Wi-Fi or wired network connection, and to make sure the printer and your device are on the same Wi-Fi network. Then open the app you want to print from; tap the Share button or the Actions button to find the print option; scroll down and tap Print; tap No Printer Selected and choose an AirPrint-enabled printer; choose the number of copies or other options, such as which pages; and tap Print in the upper-right corner. Apple adds that some apps do not support printing and that if you cannot find the print option, you should check the app’s help.
The pages we read describe no “add a printer” setting on the iPhone, and that is what the search phrases how to add printer to iphone, connecting a printer to an iphone and how to connect printer to iphone are looking for. Apple’s iPhone user guide says the same thing in a different way: use AirPrint to print wirelessly to an AirPrint-enabled printer from apps such as Mail, Photos and Safari, and some apps from the App Store support it as well. The iPhone and the printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
What the printer needs, and what cannot use AirPrint
Apple’s “About AirPrint” page, published on 17 March 2026, says AirPrint is built into most popular printer models, including some print servers. To find out whether yours supports it, you can search Apple’s list by brand, model or category; the information is provided by each manufacturer and updated regularly by Apple, and if the printer is not listed you check with the manufacturer. Printers categorised as USB-only support driverless printing or scanning only from a Mac over a USB connection.
To use an AirPrint-enabled printer you do not need to install additional drivers or other software: connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network, make sure the iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro is on the same Wi-Fi network, and choose the printer in the app’s print dialog. The other Apple page adds two cases that cannot use AirPrint: a device connected to the USB port of an Apple AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule, and one connected to your computer over a Bluetooth connection. Apple’s pages do not describe a Bluetooth setup for the iPhone.
Checking or cancelling a print job
Apple’s iPhone user guide says to open the App Switcher and tap Print Center to see the status of a print job; the badge on the icon shows how many documents are in the queue. To cancel a job, select it in Print Center and tap Cancel Printing. For a printer that stops answering on a computer, the site has pages on a printer that is offline and a printer that will not print; for the computer side of adding a printer, the page on adding a printer.
What the guides add
An Apple Discussions thread started on 17 March 2024 asked how to connect a printer to an iPhone; its top reply points to Apple’s AirPrint details and reminds the asker to check that any printer they get will support the feature. Community content may not be verified or up to date. Swappie’s blog gives the same AirPrint steps and says most modern wireless printers support it. Comp and Save’s page names three methods: AirPrint, the printer maker’s own app, such as HP Smart or Canon Print, for when AirPrint is not working, and Wi-Fi Direct for a printer that does not support AirPrint, where the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct name is chosen in the iPhone’s Settings, Wi-Fi list. Apple’s pages that we read name neither printer apps nor Wi-Fi Direct, so we cannot confirm those two methods.
