Apple TV remote not working: the order Apple gives, and a stopgap
By Alberto Gulotta · Updated · 8 min read
Apple TV remote not working has a three-part answer in Apple’s help: pair the remote, restart it, then check its signal strength. Apple also describes charging it and a remote on your iPhone as a stopgap. This page sets out the order and the limits of each step, and says what a forum thread adds.
| Question | Answer | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| What does Apple try first? | Pair the remote: about three inches from the Apple TV, hold Back (or Menu) and Volume Up for five seconds | Apple Support, 30 March 2026 |
| Is there a reset button? | Apple’s page names no reset button; it describes a restart with TV/Control Center and Volume Down held for about 5 seconds | Apple Support |
| What if some buttons work? | Check the signal strength on tvOS 18.0 or later, charge the remote for 30 minutes, update tvOS | Apple Support |
| Can I use my iPhone instead? | Yes, with an Apple TV 4K, an Apple TV HD or an AirPlay-compatible smart TV, on the same Wi-Fi | Apple Support, 27 May 2026 |
| Is it just the volume? | That has its own order in Apple’s help; see the page on volume | Apple Support |
Apple’s order: pair, restart, check the signal
Apple’s page for a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote that is not working, published on 30 March 2026, says to try pairing first. Point the remote at the Apple TV from about three inches away, press and hold the Back button (or the Menu button) and Volume Up for five seconds, and place the remote on top of the Apple TV if asked. If the remote does not pair, unplug the Apple TV, wait six seconds, plug it back into power and try again.
If you cannot pair it, Apple says to restart the remote: press and hold the TV/Control Center button and Volume Down together for about 5 seconds, or until the status light on the Apple TV turns off and on again, release, wait 5 to 10 seconds and press any button; a Remote Connected notification means you can use it. If the remote pairs but still misbehaves, check the signal: on tvOS 18.0 or later, Settings, Remotes and Devices, Remote shows a signal strength indicator. A weak or missing indicator means moving within 20 feet and clearing anything between the remote and the front of the Apple TV, television, receiver and sound bar.
Charging, updating, and the other remotes
Under “Get more help” Apple lists charging the remote for 30 minutes with a USB-C to USB or Lightning to USB cable and a USB wall charger, and updating the Apple TV to the latest tvOS, which you can do while navigating with the Apple TV Remote on an iPhone or iPad. It also links to separate pages for volume buttons that stop working and for the older aluminium or white Apple Remote, which we did not read. The volume case has its own page here: Apple TV remote volume not working. For other makes, see a TV remote that stopped, a Roku remote and a Firestick remote.
Your iPhone as a stopgap
Apple’s page on setting up the Apple TV Remote on an iPhone or iPad, dated 27 May 2026, says it works only with an Apple TV 4K, an Apple TV HD or an AirPlay-compatible smart TV; a smart TV has to be added to the Home app and assigned to a room first. Open Control Center, tap the Apple TV Remote button, choose your Apple TV or smart TV and, if asked, enter the four-digit passcode on the iPhone or iPad. If the button is missing, tap Add Controls, Add a Control and choose Remote; on iOS 17 and earlier it is under Settings, Control Center.
If it will not connect, Apple lists three checks: both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, the latest iOS or iPadOS and tvOS, and a restart of the Apple TV or smart TV and of the iPhone or iPad. The volume buttons in this remote control the Apple TV’s volume only if it is set up with a HomePod, a sound bar or other AirPlay-compatible speakers; otherwise Apple says to use the buttons on the TV’s own remote. This is the answer to the question about controlling an Apple TV without a remote.
When only some buttons fail
A thread on the MacRumors Forums, dated 24 April 2026, describes a current-generation Apple TV remote whose centre button does not respond to presses or swipes and whose volume buttons stopped controlling the owner’s stereo, while other buttons work. The owner had restarted the Apple TV and the remote, fully charged the remote and updated the software, and could still control the Apple TV with the virtual remote on an iPhone. One reply suggests checking whether the TV remote is stuck and sending commands over HDMI, and unplugging and re-plugging all the HDMI connections because the HDMI-CEC handshakes sometimes need a refresh. The owner says they will try the HDMI refresh; we do not know the outcome. Community content may not be verified or up to date.

Not covered here. We did not test an Apple TV remote. The statements come from two Apple Support pages (a remote that is not working, 30 March 2026; the Apple TV Remote on an iPhone or iPad, 27 May 2026) and a MacRumors Forums thread dated 24 April 2026, read on 25 October 2026. Menus change with the tvOS and iOS version.
The Reddit and JustAnswer pages in the results were not read, and neither was the video in the results. The older Apple Remote of aluminium or white, universal remotes and the volume buttons are not covered here.
